We have been puttering along here. Simon arrived yesterday, much to everyone's delight. The girls have been learning to knit (Grandma is such a patient teacher). There is quite the pile of washcloths accumulating. We will have to find some new projects soon.
A few minutes drive away we also found a perfect creek for hot summer days. Tadpoles and minnows, frogs and crayfish, flowers and a nest and a spring hidden between rocks. Clear cold water, ferns and moss, swift rapids and deep calm pools. There were sand bars and wading shallows... A little piece of quiet and joy and exuberance and peace all at once (and fallen trees or Uncle Lukas make excellent creek crossing options, by the way).
Tomorrow we are heading to the coast for a few days. Aquariums, sand, tidepools and smooth beach stones, wind and salt and forested cliffs-- we are ready.
I'm enjoying your summer holiday words and pictures while I'm working on my diploma project here … thanks so much for bringing in a whiff of vacation! Aaah. Soothing.
I discovered knitting as SUCH a fun thing to do (and relax) a few years ago. Never got the knitting bug as a kid … but then, no one teached me, either. Seeing those first projects is so cool, as I know exactly how it feels like (and how that first scarf never got worn, just too stiff to wrap around your neck …). "Getting" what purling and knitting looks like. Ah, the possibilities! Here's a great pattern resource, in case you don't know it yet: www.knitty.com

Knitter here! Turning downtime into productive time, and making cool things out of string...what could be better?
As always love the pictorial glimpse into your lives.
Thanks

Wow, I'm loving your oregon time! I can't tell you how it inspires me. I'm still dreaming of a trip down the coast.
Do you know when you'll be on the Island? I'm starting a new job and will be in Van for 2 weeks starting July 27 (probably). Would love to visit with you guys and meet the kids again.

Sounds like you're headed to Newport. If so, and you're checking this while on the road, then I want to recommend Otter Rock as a perfect, less-windy, lovely lovely beach. Panini's and Cafe Mundo in Nye Beach and Local Ocean on the Bayfront are all great for meals. (We were just out there today and had a fabulous Niçoise salad at Local Ocean.) Hope you have a wonderful time!
