Lucy's Quilt
Adi, look away!
One of our favourite cousins had a sweet baby girl in September, and so I decided to make her a quilt. I started out thinking that the scalloped blanket from Bend the Rules Sewing looked sweet and simple, so I should give it a go. But then I wanted to use some vintage feedsack squares I bought this summer just for this quilt. And one thing sort of led to another, and before I knew it, I had an elaborate front of 3" squares and lots of trim. Amy didn't do that. She is too clever.
I wanted it to be fun and a bit funky, and not too sugary. I spent a lot of time sorting through fabrics, arranging and rearranging, and finally decided on these:
The blue and cream animals on the back and the sides is one my mother bought in Kenya when I was a child. There are several meters of it, and I love it. I have never been brave enough to cut into it, but this baby seemed to warrant it!
The red and white polka dots and the blue roses are the vintage feedsacks.
- The coloured children are from one of the girls' favourite dresses when they were about one to two years old.
- The rest are standard quilting fabrics. I also used several strips of trim. The robots are a Japanese import from Superbuzzy. In strips down the length, there are several pieces of twill tape, embroidered with a zigzag stitch (Asher's insistence) as the final quilting.
There is also some more animal trim from Superbuzzy:
For a little quilt that was only meant to take an hour or two, this one grew into something far more involved. The stitching isn't perfect (I had my sewing helper on my lap for almost the entire process for this one). Still, I hope Mama and baby enjoy it!
Edited to add: Does everyone else see that ENORMOUS space? Sorry-- I can't seem to get rid of it! Grrr.
Oh bother. Now the space is gone but the formatting is all messed up. Sorry. One of Those Days. Just smile, nod, and carry on.
Lovely quilt and no big space!

Oh, it's precious! Couldn't be any more perfect. And it matches my Lucie's room. Maybe red and blue is the official color scheme for Lucys worldwide??
